The MCF Legacy Fund: During-life example
email page print friendly

Sherry was a retired nurse who had a heart for third-world countries and the needs of the poor there.  She developed an idea to create a special fund that would provide scholarships to aspiring nurses, but only if the student signed a contract agreeing to work at least four years on the mission field after school, using her/his newly acquired skills.  If the full four years were not met, the scholarship money must be paid back based upon the pro-rated portion of the time spent on the mission field.

Despite this wonderful idea, Sherry didn't have the time to administer the scholarship fund or keep track of the nurses once they went on the mission field.  Plus, she wanted this program to carry on after her lifetime.

How MCF met Sherry's giving goals
Sherry talked with her primary contact at MCF, who advised her to establish a Legacy Fund – separate from her existing MCF Giving Fund.  She made new gifts (appreciated assets) into the Legacy Fund, and then she and several MCF staff members formed the “Legacy Advisory Committee.”

Sherry essentially played a supervisory role over the Committee, while MCF's team handled the majority of logistical work – which included administering the scholarship fund, tracking nurses' school grades, and monitoring their activity on the mission field.

After Sherry's death, MCF faithfully and reliably maintained the Legacy Fund in the same manner as when Sherry was alive, based on her written instructions.

Purchasing supplies for a Christian school ... just one of the many ways that individuals and families are furthering the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the MCF Legacy Fund.
